Michigan

Alliance for Safety and Justice combines advocacy, organizing, coalition building, awareness building and research to drive smart policies that stop the cycle of crime.

2024 Policies

Safer Michigan Act policies, supported by evidence and crime survivors in Michigan, will help achieve shared safety for all.

Safer Michigan Act

SB 861-864 / HB 4450-53 Productivity Credits

These bills would enact productivity credits, which incentivize only certain people sentenced to prison to participate in rehabilitative programs that reduce recidivism and make reentry into society more successful, resulting in safer communities, a stronger workforce and less taxpayer dollar spending. Productivity credits do not guarantee someone’s release from prison, but do permit earlier parole consideration through a credit-earning system.

Safer Michigan Act

Safe Housing

This policy would expand survivor housing protections so that more survivors can end a lease early if they need to relocate due to the crime, without facing related long-term financial consequences. It also protects survivors from being refused housing, having their rent increased, or being evicted due to their status as a victim.

Safer Michigan Act

Safe Leave

This policy would make sure more crime survivors can use the sick time that they have already earned for reasons relating to their victimization, without risking their jobs.
